Week Eight Tasks

Part Two:
I have decided to go with MovieMaker to make my audio/visual project. I realised today it's quite simple to use and that I can use all sorts of different transitions, I can also make one image appear longer than another - hence, one image can have more a dramatic impact over another image! I am using all my own material so there will be no question/worry about copyright issues. 

Part One:
  • Matt Lee writes in his article, "What is free software and why is it so important for society?" (2011)  that free software is where a user can modify, share and study software. It is called free software because the user is free. On the Creative Commons website (https://creativecommons.org/about) their mission is "Creative Commons develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and innovation".
  • Copyright doesn't make sense for some things as it was created long before the Internet. It can make it hard for someone to legally justify why they have copied, pasted etc over the Web. It requires that EVERYONE has to have explicit permission before they can use specific content (https://creativecommons.org/about). Cory Doctorow from Locus Magazine states that Copyright is forever! The net is rapidly changing, than we ever expected or imagined and when Congress wrote and revised it in 17UCC - American copyright law - they wouldn't of imagined that things would be so different in the 21st century!
  • Proprietary software is the 'traditional software'. The major benefit is that there is legal protection on code on content. And it is developed by paid staff teams.
  • GNU Operating System describes Free Software as a matter of liberty and that one should think of it as 'free speech' - a right. In 1981, Richard M Stallman started the Free Software foundation. Free Software gives you the right to make modifications and use them in your own work - you don't even have to mention that they exist!  
  • The difference between free and open software is that open software is pushing to be in the 'bussiness world'. Emphasis on open not free! Open to all!
  • Free Software is important for all computer users as it is openly available, it is community orientated - "The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbour".
  • At home we have Firefox on all our computers and it is fantastic! We can Web browse without any fuss (a lot faster too!) and it saves us from getting horrible viruses - it also tells you to STOP! if the web page is not secure :)
